ABOUT

This blog explores the culture of the United States. The primary topics are identity and discourse. I seek definitions of “American” from four different angles: how we see and describe ourselves; how we behave; how our national media portrays us; how we are perceived by the rest of the world. I also examine value systems by analyzing the word on the street, particularly how real dialogue compares to national and international rhetoric.

The secondary purpose of this blog is personal–to practice methods and writing in preparation for a PhD program in Anthropology. Coming from a person with only a bachelor’s degree in the field, it’s either an ambitious or naive question: Can an American anthropologist effectively and fairly examine her own culture?
